What is a Headset Bearing?
Headset bearings can be overlooked on bikes, but they actually provide a very important function, they will be constantly used every day and they involve the part that permits you to steer the bike as well as holding the fork into place. The headset bearing in the interface between the fork and the bike frame, by holding it in place securely, allows the bike to be rotated and steered. Whilst the interface needs lateral stiffness, this is so it can cope with a range of riding loads, such as cornering, braking and potholes, it will also need to be rotationally loose for steering. Correctly maintained bearings are essential to any successful cycling trip. - Press in headset cups after removing bearings
- For an alloy steerer tube, replace the star nut and use a hammer to pound the replacement into place.
- For a carbon steerer tube, install the compression plug by threading it through until it gets snug.

Headset Bearing Sizes
Headset bearings are available in a variety of sizes, with various angle chambers. If you aren't sure what size you require, the sure fire way to identify the size of your headset bearings is with the metric measurements. In the bike industry, 1.⅛, 1.½ etc refer to the fork steerer and cannot be used to identify a headset bearing. Using a vermeer calliper will help you to accurately measure the bearings internal, external and height dimensions, ensuring you are able to buy the right size headset bearing. If you aren't sure what you are looking for, the team at Aire Velo Bearings can supply a tool for checking what the chamfer angles are on the headset. Should you require more information Aire Velo Bearings have got you covered on headset bearings and sizes, be sure to visit our explanation page and view the guide we have created, this should help you to identify the bearings you currently have, and what replacement bearings are available.

You may decide that you need 1 inch threadless steerers and these tend to be quite common. Types of Headset
There's a wide range of headset bearings available, and here at Aire Velo Bearings we are proud to be able to offer customers throughout the UK bearings from industry leading manufacturers. The different types and styles of headset bearings that we have available for customers are:
Conventional Threaded Headset
Threaded headsets bearings were once the most popular form of headset, and are often found on older bikes. With a threaded headset, external threads are on top of the fork steerer column and bearing cups are pressed into the frame. When it comes to sizing, threaded headsets come in standard sizes; 1 - ⅛“ and 1 -¼”. The size of the threaded headset will depend on the outer diameter of the steering column.
Threadless headsets bearings are different to threaded headsets where the headsets sit inside bearing cups, and either sealed cartridge bearings or balls sitting in a retaining cage (need regular maintenance) can be used. When it comes to threadless headset, the compatible stem must match the steerer diameter, this is because the stem is used to apply pressure to the top race. The compatible stem will bind to the outside of the column to hold the top race in place. Threadless headset bearing sizes are 1” and 1-⅛” diameter, these can be straight headset bearings and are 1-⅛” or tapered headset bearings which are 1.5”. You will be able to find the headset bearing size your bike requires by looking at the steerer.
Alternative Headset Bearings
If you are looking for hybrid ceramic headset bearings, we can also supply these. Although it should be noted that we currently only supply the most popular bearings sizes. We can also provide customers throughout the UK with loose balls in steel, stainless steel and ceramic (Si3N4).

Measuring Your Bike Headset
An essential component to your bike, your bike's headset is easily overlooked and neglected. This bearing assembly is what keeps your fork attached to the bicycle and allows you to move the handlebars to steer your bicycle. Bike headsets have a similar way of working, with two bearings in the headtube, which is held in place by the handlebar stem that your fork's steerer tube passes through. Though they all behave in a similar way, bike headsets come in a few different sizes so picking the right size for your bike is essential should you need to replace any of the components:
Identify the Headtube Type: Head Tubes can be press-fit or integrated and both have different fitting requirements. Press-fit head tubes need headset cups that are pressed into the headtube of the bicycle for the headset bearings to sit inside. Integrated head tubes are integrated into the frame of the bicycle for the headset bearings to rest on.
Identify the Headtube Dimensions: If you're measuring a press-fit headtube, you are measuring in millimetres the inside diameter of the headtube top and bottom, with numbers ranging from 30mm to 62mm. In the case of integrated headtubes, you are measuring the outside diameter at the very top of the headtube as the inside races are more angular. You can then measure the diameter of bearings to decide what is best for your bike headset.
Bikes are great for a number of practical uses, from transport from A to B, keeping fit, or travelling with a lowered impact on the environment. Keeping your bike headset in good condition is essential for maintaining your bicycle. For more information, check out our blog on Green Cycling!

Frequently Asked Questions
How to replace headset bearings?
You may think that replacing a headset is hard, but really it sounds harder than it actually is. The headset bearings are an essential part of the bicycle, allowing the handlebars to rotate smoothly and precisely. Here at Aire Velo Bearings, we want to make things as easy as possible for all of our customers who are looking for replacement headset bearings, which is why we have created this guide, with step by step instructions for changing your headset bearings.
When should I replace my headset bearings?
Although judging when the headset bearings on your bicycle need replacing may be difficult, there's a couple of tell-tale signs that your headset bearings are worn or corroded. If your bicycle headset bearings are worn or corroded you may feel or hear the bike more, although you may not hear it as such, you will be able to feel the vibrations that are transmitted throughout the bicycle. The bike will feel rougher and you may find steering isn't as smooth as it was. Headset bearing wear and tear may also be visible by brown fluid that runs from the lower bearing at the back of the fork. If you are still unsure whether your headset needs replacing be sure to get in touch with an expert.
What headset bearings do I need?
The sure fire way to identify the headset bearings you need for your bike is through the metric measurements. In the bike industry 1.⅛ and 1.½ are commonly used to refer to the fork steerer; these measurements cannot and should not be used to identify the size of a headset bearing. You should use a vernier calliper to accurately measure the internal dimensions, the external dimension and the height dimensions of the headset bearing. To ensure you receive the correct headset bearings, we can also provide you with a tool to check the chamfer angles of the headset, having the right size headset bearings is vital in the running and performance of your bike.
Can I replace my headset bearings without replacing the entire headset?
In the majority of cases yes, especially if your headset bearings uses sealed cartridge bearings. To be sure that your headset bearings can be replaced without replacing the entire headset we recommend identifying the headset model, while some bearings can be replaced with little fuss and disruption, some headsets will not allow replacement bearings.
